How to change a single-pitch to dual-pitch roof?

I am planning to replace the single-pitched asphalt shingle roof on my 1000 sq ft two floor home in Honolulu, HI. I want to extend out the new roof by changing the pitch at the current roof line making possible construction of a deck on the upper floor. Obviously additional rafters will be constructed. I am most interested in how the new, lower pitched rafters are designed and secured to the existing rafters.

Yes, I am interested to know the state of the art in materials to be used in such a renovation.
